Vitamin
Therapy to Overcome Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Sept 2015: Inclusion of Intellectual and Developmental Disabled (IDD)
persons into the main stream of our society is the objective of " Mentally
Challenged Persons Empowerment Trust". Our assertion is that daily
supplement of special vitamin - Methylcobalamin, an enzyme form of B12 will
lead to this objective. It is possible for IDDs to get included into the
society like the persons taking daily tablet(s) for sugar, BP or heart problems.
Normally,
our body produces the required Vitamin B12 from the food we eat in a day. This
Vitamin B12 has a small percentage of methylcobalamin. Methylcobalamin is
essential to maintain healthy nerves. Deficiency of Methylcobalamin will lead
to neurological disorders. Scientists in Japan discovered
that Methylcobalamin repairs damaged myelin sheath surrounding nerve axons.
Undamaged myelin sheath is necessary for rapid conduction of signal in axon. A
research team in Japan reported
that administration of Methylcobalamin to aged persons resulted in increased
memory and attention.
.
There are
several drugs in India with
Methylcobalamin. These are normally prescribed to persons with nerves problems, diabetes, old
age related problems. There are reports indicating that Merthylcobalamin is
used for Autism, Cerebral palsy and other IDD related disorders in other
countries. However these are infrequent. There is no scientific/ systematic
clinical trials to validate the efficacy of Methylcobalamin in IDD related
disorders.
Our
intention is to bring awareness on the usage of Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin)
for IDD related disorders. We want to highlight the benefits of using this
specific form of vitamin B12 to IDD persons. There are several products
available in the market with cost ranging from Rs 4 per 10 tablets to nearly Rs
90 per 10 tablets. These vitamins can be purchased from regular medical stores
without prescription. We suggest daily supplement of Vitamin B12
(Methylcobalamin) 500 mcg (micrograms) for children in the age group 5 to 15
years, 1500 mcg for persons above 15 years. It can be given in the morning
after breakfast. Child will be active through out the day. Please note that
this form of vitamin is water solvable, excess vitamin will go through urine. We intend to provide vitamin B12
(Methylcobalamin) for the economically weaker section on a trial basis for a
month or two. They have to make arrangements on their own to continue
subsequently if it is found to be beneficial to IDD person during trial period.
There is an important role for family members in our campaign. They should go
through this note and decide on using Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin) or not. It
is they who should seek the advise of physician in this regard if they wish.
Our role is only to the extent of providing information ( list of references,
brief report on these articles will be sent on request), tablets from
registered company for trial period. In case family members want to avail the
tablets given free, they should give declaration that they are responsible for
using vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin)
Jan2016: About 100 persons tried Methyl B12 tablets in the last 4 months
with the consent of their family members ( some of them consulted their family
doctor). These persons are in the age group 5 to 40 years. These persons are from Hyderabad, Kakinada , Yanam, remote
villages in East Godavari district 10% have shown remarkable improvement, 10%
reported no change, rest have reported varying improvement. In many cases, we
are not clear about the expected improvement.
It is observed that children in the age group 5 to 12 years shown better
results. It is reported that children with behaviour problems, mental
retardation (hypo activity), speech problem, memory problems, learning disability,
drooling problem and children with sensory integration problems improved. There is some improvement with CP children. Hyper
active children, hyper sensitive children, children with epilepsy have shown no
change. Individuals using Anti Convulsion Drugs (ACD) are excluded. There are
clinical research reports indicating that ACDs reduce the thickness of myelin
sheath, just opposite to Methyl B12.
Important: The above description is for information
