This blog is about my
work with PwIDD (Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities). I
started studying the problems of these less fortunate persons a decade ago. My
initial focus was on improving their living conditions, then I shifted my focus
to empowering them through formal education and gainful employment. These days
I have become ambitious and started working towards eradication of intellectual
and developmental disability. I understand that deficiency of vitamin B12
(cobalamin) is the cause for most of the intellectual and developmental
disorders. One can overcome this deficiency using a variation of vitamin B12 (
Methylcobalamin), which is available in many medical stores as a diet
supplement. This is not a prescription drug, can be purchased over the counter.
I am an electronics
engineer with more than 4 decades experience in research, teaching and IT
industry. Research is my passion and solving the unsolved always interests me.
Four Phases in EIDD
(Eradicating Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities).
First phase is
addressing the problems of PwIDD of the age group 15 years and above. Objective
here is to reduce the inconvenience to the individual, family members and
society around the individual. The extent to which an individual can overcome
with regular use of vitamin B12 ( Methylcobalamin) depends on the type and
severity of the disorder.
Second phase is about
the children in the age group 5 to 15 years. Aim here is to put back these
children into main stream of the society soon, armed with formal education and
minor disabilities like limited vocabulary. The rate at which a child can
achieve this is largely depends on the co-operation from the family. Regular
use of vitamin B12 ( Methylcobalamin) might restore the damage done to the
central nervous systems and certain parts of the brain.
Third phase is
concerning infants and small children of the age below 5 years. It is reported
that the possibility of repairing the injury to the brain can be done during
the formation period of central nervous system. Coordinated effort from
parents, institutes working with this type of children and health workers is
required.
Fourth phase is during
pregnancy and pre-natal period. This phase has several gray areas. There are no
reports regarding the clinical trials of vitamin B12 ( Methylcobalamin) for
cobalamin deficient pregnant mothers. Animal trials indicate vitamin B12 (
Methylcobalamin) improves neural tube development.
